“Electric mobility is a winning strategy not just in large urban areas but it is also becoming an important tool for attracting and welcoming tourists, enhancing the beauty of our country.” These were Enel CEO Francesco Starace’s words at the opening of three charging stations for electric cars installed in Castellabate by Enel X. The Mayor of the municipality of Cilento area, Costabile Spinelli, was also present at the event, which took place on 9 August.

This project is the result of effective collaboration between Enel and the municipality dedicated to the development of innovative products and digital solutions. It not only seeks to promote the development of sustainable mobility in the region, but also to create zero-emission tourist routes in Campania. The three new charging stations inaugurated by Francesco Starace are equipped with special parking stalls and are located in Piazza Lucia, in the bus manoeuvring area in Borgo Castellabate and in Piazza Punta dell’Inferno.
During the ceremony, Enel CEO said “We are gladly making our contribution with three innovative charging stations in Castellabate, in the heart of the Cilento National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.” Francesco Starace focused on the value of the project and stressed that zero-emission vehicles are the ideal way to explore the beauty of Italian villages: “A charging infrastructure network covering the main cultural centres and tourist sites is a decisive factor in the development of the sector.” He listed a number of benefits: in addition to improving the quality of the services providing a significant air and noise pollution reduction, the project also contributes to strengthening the competitiveness of our country.
Through Enel X, the Group is thus strongly engaged in efforts to implement the National Plan for the construction of a charging infrastructure for electric vehicles: it was presented by Francesco Starace last November and provides for the installation of about 7,000 charging stations by the year 2020, reaching 14,000 by 2022. To this day, over 350 Italian municipalities have signed a memorandum of understanding with Enel X: in Campania there are 21, including Castellabate, which have decided to install 140 charging stations, but the agreements with other institutions are already being defined. The aim is to install over 300 charging stations by the end of 2018.
